Women in Parliament
Women elected to the Parliament of Tasmania
Over the 200-year history of the Parliament of Tasmania, women have been elected 79 times: 25 times to the Legislative Council ('upper House') and 54 times to the House of Assembly ('lower House').
As some women have been elected more than once, these 79 elections represent 70 individual women who have served as Members of Parliament.
Women who were eligible to vote first gained the right to stand for election in 1922. However, it was not until 1948 that a woman was elected to the Parliament of Tasmania for the first time.
